2013 Nissan Juke Nismo closer to coming to America

First shown as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show and first unveiled in production trim at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo has just had its first in-person meeting with the Autoblog team at the Paris Motor Show. While not quite as extreme as its Juke R brother – not having a GT-R drivetrain kind of takes the edge off – the Juke Nismo nonetheless kicks the standard car up a few notches to become even more of an enthusiast's plaything than a quasi-crossover.

With the laying on of hands from Nismo, Nissan's in-house performance tuning and motorsports arm, this Juke benefits from a host of improvements that up its performance game. The changes begin with a complete Nismo aero package that includes new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, side skirts, rear spoiler and front grille. Eighteen-inch alloys wheels get tucked under those new fenders, while the interior benefits from a lavish swathing of grippy Alcantara on the new sport seats and steering wheel.

Nissan says that the Juke's direct-injected turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder has been modified for Nismo duty, presumably for more power, though the company is still keeping tight-lipped about new power figures. The 1.6-liter as it stands in the base Juke produces a healthy 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, but even if the engine weren't upgraded, Nismo has also addressed performance from a handling perspective by fitting the Juke with a stiffer suspension and revised steering, along with tweaking its traction control and torque vectoring systems. Launching in Europe early next year, the Juke Nismo will then be made available in Japan before finally making its way to North America at a yet-to-be-determined later date. Pricing is still a mystery as well, but it's safe to say the Nismo will probably be at least a few thousand dollars over the standard model.

2013 Audi SQ5 is the first S diesel

Audi is a company synonymous with diesel performance. Its efforts at the 24 Hours of Le Mans have repeatedly proven what can be accomplished with a healthy oil-burner at your command, but until now, buyers were unable to pick up spots-oriented models with a TDI badge. That's changed with the debut of the SQ5 TDI at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

As the first S model with a diesel engine, the crossover boasts 309 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The grunt gets to the ground via an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission and the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The combination can hustle the SQ5 to 62 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds.

Engineers have dropped the chassis by 1.2 inches, bolted on a set of 20-inch wheels and stuffed the option sheet with a dynamic steering system. The base model starts at €58,500, though those with more money than functional synapses can cough up €92,000 for the SQ5 Exclusive. Each of the 50 examples will feature special
Aral Blue paint outside as well as woven leather seats, special ash veneers and a slathering of Nappa leather indoors.

Sergio #Marchionne calls #VW execs 'reprehensible,' singles out Piech

Fiat chairman Sergio Marchionne said Friday he will keep his title of President of the European Automotive Manufacturers Association [ACEA], a day after he excoriated Volkswagen executives for calling for his resignation and suggesting in public that Fiat would not survive the economic recession in Europe without a government rescue.

The ACEA CEOs met at the Paris Motor Show, as they do every year, Friday morning after Marchionne, meeting with reporters Thursday, dared VW executives to call for his resignation in the meeting, in compliance with the lobbying group's governance. Marchionne called "reprehensible" recent actions by VW executives, including supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech (right) and CEO Martin Winterkorn (left) for calling for his resignation from ACEA through the VW press office.

Indeed, Stephan Gruehsem, VW's chief spokesman, said in July that Marchionne was not qualified to head the ACEA and threatened that VW would quit the organization after a New York Times article said that Marchionne blamed VW's pricing strategy for creating a "bloodbath" in Europe.
The fracas is one chapter in what has become an unusually (for the auto industry) public war of words between Marchionne and VW officials. Besides calling out VW for aggressive pricing in Europe (in his role as Fiat CEO, not ACEA president), Marchionne has also angered VW by suggesting that plant closures in Europe to cut the over-capacity of factories should be be coordinated centrally with the European Union, not left to the individual companies.

In other words, Marchionne wants the EU to potentially tell VW to close a plant in Germany, which it has not ever done since after World War Two, rather than all the plants being affected in France, Italy, Poland and elsewhere. Marchionne said that was his own view, not one that would ever be adopted by ACEA and taken to the EU.

Marchionne, known for a quiet but blunt style, said Thursday about VW officials' criticism of him:

"I don't know Piech, or his press officer... but I don't give a flying hoot about their opinions... which they can take and stick in their G5."

VW has used steep discounting to drive up its market share in Europe as the economy tanks, inflicting a lot of hurt on Fiat, Peugeot and Renault. General Motors TK Susan Docherty said in her press briefing that no profit can be made in Europe as long as Fiat, VW and Peugeot, she singled out, discount vehicles by as much as 30%.

And then there is VW's public stalking of Alfa Romeo. Winterkorn recently reiterated his pitch this week through the media to Marchionne that VW would still like to buy Fiat's Alfa Romeo brand from the Italian automaker. Winterkorn said on Aug. 31 he still finds the Italian brand owned by Fiat "attractive." Piech first expressed VW's interest in the Italian premium brand two years ago at the Paris Motor Show.

"Mr. Piech drop it, go and sing somewhere else," Marchionne said Wednesday during a speech in Turin. "I am not surprised by the German boasting." It is somewhat surprising that VW should want another brand. It already has two too many in its stable by the reckoning of most analysts with Skoda and Seat in Europe, which not only compete with the VW brand with nearly identical vehicles, but in some cases get better reviews than the Volkswagen versions.

But that's not all. VW's chief financial officer suggested last Wednesday that at least one manufacturer, strongly suggesting Fiat, will not withstand the current slow down in Europe without government aid. "It is unclear if all carmakers will survive without governmental help," VW CFO Hans Dieter Poetsch told reporters on Thursday. "Especially carmakers in southern Europe that produce small cars will be affected."

I personally have a high respect for Mr. Marchionne, his turn around of Chrysler and Fiat have been on this side of amazing. He is responsible for some amazing companies that are doing some truly tremendous things right now.

I just want to drive this over some Colorado mountain passes and blow by the Subaru STIs

BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride and 2013 X1 Powder Ride Edition are ready to hit the slopes

'

BMW is celebrating the North American launch of its X1 compact crossover with a special edition and the new lifestyle-oriented concept shown above. The Concept K2 Powder Ride is the summation of a three-year partnership between BMW and sports-equipment manufacturer K2. The companies have slathered the exterior of an X1 with a special graphics package lifted from a limited-edition K2 ski and designers bolted on a custom roof rack to accommodate all sorts of gear. The rack also features a Harman Kardon speaker system for impromptu dance sessions. Or something.

More importantly, the Concept K2 Powder ride features a little extra ground clearance and 19-inch wheels. Indoors, BMW has graced the machine with a custom interior, complete with black Nappa leather held together by orange contrast stitching. Back in the real world, the soon-to-be-at-dealers BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition is based on the X1 xLine, complete with aluminum-trim roof rails, a ski and snowboard bag, all-weather floor mats and a pair of special K2 LTD Powder Ride skis. The skis are only available on the X1 Powder Ride Edition. Look for the limited-edition model to show up on dealer lots starting next month.

How #Colorado beat out rest of the world for setting of #Forza Horizon

Turn 10 studios has released another video bringing us behind the scenes of its upcoming extension to the Forza Motorsport franchise, Forza Horizon. Hitting store shelves on October 23, Forza Horizon leaves the race tracks behind by putting players in an open-world environment that's modeled after Colorado. How did Colorado get the nod? As the video explains, it was one of 30 real-world locations being considered, but its combinations of excellent driving roads and breathtaking scenery made it the obvious choice.

Game developers took trips to the Centennial State and returned with hundreds of hours of video and over 50,000 images from which to build their own version. What they built is a fictionalized version of Colorado assembled from all of its best parts: plains, canyons, lakes, forests, mountains, red rock formations, towns and, of course, the Horizon festival around which the entire game is based.

According to Turn 10, you'll be able to drive the same cars from Forza Motorsport 4 in Forza Horizon, and your game world will be populated with AI cars and other real players driving their own cars via Xbox Live. Challenging them to a race is as simple as pulling up alongside their car and hitting the X button. You both take off and follow a course that the game creates dynamically in real time.

The coolest new feature talked about in the video is barn finds. There are apparently historic cars hidden in barns throughout the Horizon world. When you find one, you can have it restored to running order and use it as your own ride. Check out how it works in the video below.

Lastly, Turn 10 has announced that a Season Pass for the game will cost you $50 (or 4,000 Microsoft Points) and get you the "Forza Horizon" Expansion pack, six game-car packs with six vehicles each, as well as five exclusive season-pass vehicles and the launch-day pack.

Let me tell you something you already know. Rocky Balboa (2006)
