Audi reveals A1 Sportback five-door

The A1 has grown another two doors. Audi has just unveiled a new five-door version of the hatchback designed to give European buyers a little more flexibility when it comes to moving people and cargo. Like its thee-door counterpart, the new model will be available with a total of six engine options, including three gasoline mills and three diesel lumps when it arrives in show rooms early next year. The most powerful of those engines is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 185 horsepower, and buyers willing to lay down the cash can opt for the company's six-speed S Tronic transmission.

Inside, the vehicle's luggage compartment serves up around 9.5 cubic feet of cargo area, though than number swells to over 32 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Audi says that the back head rests don't need to be removed in order to stash the back bench, and the A1 Sportback features a loading deck that's just a little over 25 inches off of the ground.

Ford Fiesta ST Concept

Ford claims that in this application, the 1.6-liter EcoBoost delivers 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque – a whopping 60 more ponies than the naturally aspirated 1.6 featured in the garden-variety production Fiesta. Given that the base Fiesta is only 2,600 pounds, we're guessing 180 horsepower is more than enough punch to turn the Fiesta into one heck of a fun ride.

Would it Kill Jeep to make it a little more Macho? Look at the rims on the Wrangler compared to this.

Jeep may not have anything big to show us here in Los Angeles, but that doesn't mean the automaker has arrived empty-handed. New for 2012, Jeep has released special Arctic Editions of both the Wrangler and Liberty SUVs, and the icy duo make their debut here at the LA Auto Show.

On both models, the Arctic package adds semi-gloss wheels – the Wrangler receiving 17-inch rollers while the Liberty makes due with 16s – as well as special paint, Arctic badging and a decidedly tacky Yeti footprint decal. Inside, there are some minor aesthetic tweaks, including white accent fabrics, orange piping on the seats and, of course, more badging. I am very excited to see this in person and get a feeling of the actual size. I love the front end, Pretty much Copy and Pasted right from the Fiesta / Focus.

Subaru reveals more about BRZ Concept STI

Curiously, the Concept STI does without a turbocharged engine – something that's become a Subarutradition with its performance cars. Instead, the direct-injected 2.0-liter Boxer four has been left unchanged. Never fear, though – STI has added a full smattering of performance bits to the BRZ, including a more aggressively tuned suspension setup, Brembo brakes, and lightweight materials (a carbon fiber roof and wheels, specifically) to reduce overall weight.

Mazda reveals 2013 CX-5 for U.S.

Powering the CX-5 is Mazda's new 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G gasoline four-cylinder with direct-injection technology. This powerplant is already available in the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, and in the CX-5, it's good for 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a new Skyactiv six-speed manual or automatic transmission (the manual is only available in the bottom-rung Sport trim, sadly). The CX-5 is not as powerful as other offerings in the class – the Kia Sportage and much larger Toyota RAV4, among others, offer more grunt – but Mazda says that the Skyactiv powertrain should return best-in-class fuel economy figures: 26/32 miles per gallon (city/highway) with the automatic transmission or an even better 33 mpg highway with the manual. Based on our Nordic test drive, the lighter CX-5 is also likely to be more fun to drive than its contemporaries.

Another disappointment in the small SUV / CUV range. Mazda creates this amazing car, beautiful lines and just a great car. Where they go wrong is the engine options. I want to see a Mazda Speed CX-5. A small SUV with just a little more grunt. maybe drop it a inch of two, put in the 273 hp engine from the MazdaSpeed 3 and maybe pair it with an awd system. Mazda would already have one buyer. Me.
